  1. Step back and take stock.

When you’re stuck in a rut, the feeling can be overwhelming, depressing and flat. It’s ok to feel stuck, that’s normal. Just pause, breathe and give yourself space to gain perspective.

  2. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Change brings about uncertainty, fear and doubt. Our brains are wired for safety and security to anticipate threats in order to protect us, but the reality is you can’t possibly anticipate every situation and outcome. This is where being mindful helps. Connect with the present to centre yourself, allowing a sense of attention and clarity to guide you towards the unknown path ahead.

  3. Reconnect to who you really are.

Ask yourself, what’s really important to me and how does this align with my current work, lifestyle and values? Core motivations can reignite energy and steer you into a direction that feels more authentic, but remember you don’t need a perfect plan to get started.

  4. Clear the clutter.

Declutter your home, workspace, digital life, calendar, but most importantly your mind. A clear mind helps you redefine your purpose and direction. Not to mention the newfound energy you’ll gain.

  5. Let go to make space.

You can’t reset while you’re attached to everything. Release outdated goals, roles, relationships, habits or ideas that no longer serve you. This creates mental bandwidth and helps recalibrate your internal compass.

  6. Journal your thoughts.

Get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Brainstorm all ideas without any judgement. Write about what’s weighing you down, what you’re avoiding or what’s confusing. Dreams, strategies and next steps often emerge when you externalise your thoughts.

  7. Change one tiny thing today.

No need for a complete overhaul. Baby steps are more realistic, achievable and help you move forward without overwhelming you. Clarity often comes after you start, not before.

  8. Give yourself permission to make mistakes.

Beware of unrealistic expectations and perfectionism that can sometimes immobilise you from starting at all. Challenge the mental chatter and limiting thoughts. Mistakes while arduous, are merely opportunities for us to learn, adapt and grow. Freedom comes with believing that you don’t have to get it right all the time, you just have to give it a go.

  9. Talk to someone.

It helps to talk it out. Whether it’s a friend, mentor, coach or therapist, speak your stuckness out aloud. Sometimes all you need is a sounding board, a person who will listen, believe in you, encourage you and keep you on track.

  10. Celebrate the small wins.

Your nervous system learns safety and motivation from small wins, not massive leaps. Recognising your progress no matter how modest, fuels momentum. This tells you that change is possible and definitely within reach.
