No matter how tough it gets, we will get our opportunity if we keep at it.

That’s what Socceroos coach Tony Popovic told his team at halftime last night - under pressure, outplayed, and hanging on against Japan.  Football (or soccer if you prefer) is such an intriguing game and a masterclass for many things related to leadership and strategy.

They didn’t panic. They didn’t give up. They kept at it!

And when their moment came, they took it. A brilliant, desperate, and lucky win.

But the game and advice are also a reminder for all of us - in work, in business, in life that things don’t always go your way or according to plan. Sometimes, we are up against a better opponent with a better strategy.

When this happens, acknowledge your reality and reinforce your belief.  Keep going, stay in the fight, trust yourself and others. That’s the lesson in coaching and leadership that I took from last night.

It is a reminder how work and business can feel like that game.

• A small business up against bigger, better-funded competitor.

• A team stretched thin on a project that’s veered off course.

• A leader under fire, struggling to stay composed.

Stay in it. Back yourself. Your opportunity will also come.
