As a former regulator, I admire the work of eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman - Grant.

This ABC 7.30 interview highlights excellent leadership and communication. I’m proud that Australia is leading the world in protecting children from having sexual, violent or harmful conversations with AI companions.

What we need from regulators is leadership: guiding people and markets through uncertainty and risk with clarity, inspiration, deterrence and direction. Too often the message is overly measured and lacks impact. Not Inman Grant. She says it as it is, powerful and credible:

“𝘞𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰.”

“𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺'𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴.”

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺 — 𝘸𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘹 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳.”

“𝘐'𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺.”

This is change leadership in action:

• 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬, 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘜𝘱

• 𝘚𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯

• 𝘔𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵

Isn’t this the kind of clarity and courage we need from all leaders?
